  4. Venus several months to move from one of these extremes to the other.

  6. EARTH
  7. The earth (Terra) has a substantial atmosphere, mainly of nitrogen and oxygen,
  8. and a magnetosphere linked to a magnetic field.  Two-thirds of the planet is
  9. covered by water.  On average the earth's surface transfers to the atmosphere
  10. an amount of energy equal to that it absorbs.

  12. The earth consists of three main internal layers:  the crust, mantle, and core.
  13. The crust consists largely of sedimentary rocks, such as limestone and 
  14. sandstone, resting on a base of igneous rocks, such as granite and basalt.  The
  15. mantle's composition is thought to contain a high proportion of silicate rocks.
  16. The core is composed predominantly of iron with several, possibly many,
  17. additional components.

  19. It is believed that the pressure at the earth's center is about 400 
  20. gigapascals, whereas the internal temperature may exceed 5 000 K at the center.
